FOOD FOR THE SPIRIT: Is Your Soul on a Junk Food Diet?

They say, “You are what you eat.” The food you crave says a lot about your character, but it says even more about your health. We all know that a diet of greasy junk food leads to a sluggish and vulnerable body, while a clean, balanced diet builds a strong and agile body.

But here is the real question: What is the state of your spirit? Is your spirit fit and ready for the race, or is it malnourished and heavy with “spiritual junk food”? It’s time to take an honest look at what you’ve been feeding your soul.

Addiction: Good vs. Bad Food

Food, whether physical or spiritual, is addictive. We can become just as hooked on sin as we can on junk food.

Disclaimer: The following analogy is not meant to offend anyone struggling with weight and health issues. It is used to help us understand the spiritual expectations placed on a believer of the Most High.

Consider the difference between a person who is physically obese and a person who is an athlete.

  • The Obese Person: Often addicted to “bad” food that destroys the body from the inside out. Even when they know it’s harmful, the addiction makes it feel impossible to stop.
  • The Athlete: They aren’t just eating “good” food; they are eating a balanced diet and pushing their body through exercise.

The Lion Test: Imagine both people on a race track with a pride of lions released behind them. The man who fed on junk food will struggle to move; his body will fail him, and the lions will devour him. The fit man will run with endurance. He might trip, but his strength allows him to spring back up and keep running.

It is our daily reality.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking את whom he may devour: Kepha Ri’shon (1 Peter) 5:8 | את Cepher

If you feed your spirit a steady diet of secular music, horror movies, alcohol, bad company, and worldly philosophies, you are “fattening” your mind with toxicity. You cannot expect to have the spirit of a warrior if you only give YAHUAH 10 minutes of your day while giving the world 10 hours.

1. Eating the “Good Food” (The Word)

The good food that saves your life is the Word of YAHUAH. Reading the Bible isn’t just a religious chore; it is the daily bread that prepares your spirit for trials. A firm believer fed on the Word won’t just give up when tackled to the ground when life gets hard.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in YAHUAH, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of YAHUAH, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of YAHUAH, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Eph’siym (Ephesians) 6:10-13 | את Cepher

“Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Mashiach, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” Philippians 1:27 NKJV

2. Eating a Balanced Diet (The Whole Counsel)

Are you a “picky eater” with your Bible? Do you only read the verses that make you feel good? To be healthy, you need all the nutrients and not just some.

  • Carbohydrates give you energy (the promises of YAHUAH).
  • Proteins repair your wounds (repentance and healing).
  • Vitamins and minerals protect your system (wisdom and discernment).

If you skip the “hard” parts of the Bible, you leave your spirit vulnerable to deception. You need every word that proceeds from the mouth of YAHUAH

(But he answered and said: It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahuah. Mattithyahu (Matthew) 4:4 | את Cepher).

3. Training and Exercising your Spirit

Reading the Word without obeying it is like a bodybuilder who eats protein but never lifts a weight, the muscles never develop. To be spiritually fit, you must be a doer of the word, not just a hearer.

  • Practice Obedience and fruits of the spirit: If you love Him, keep His commandments (John 14:15).Galatians 5:22-23
Self-Examination

YAHUAH does not do “balance” in the way the world does (like the Yin and Yang). He is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. So we shouldn’t be part light and part dark (lukewarm).

Ask yourself honestly:

  1. What am I really feeding my mind?
  2. Is my spirit strong enough to outrun the lion?
  3. Am I practicing what I read?
  4. Am I only reading what tickles my ear or doing only what makes me comfortable?

Take a moment to examine yourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). Ensure that what you are consuming is pleasing to YAHUAH and building you into the athlete YAHUAH has called you to be.

Some verses to take home

1. For Instant Energy (When You Feel Faint or Discouraged)

  • But they that wait upon YAHUAH shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 40:31 | את Cepher
  • YAHUAH is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise Him. Tehilliym (Psalms) 28:7 | את Cepher

2. For Spiritual Immunity (Wisdom and Discernment)

  • Trust in El-YAHUAH with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths. Mishlei (Proverbs) 3:5-6 | את Cepher
  • If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of YAHUAH, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him. Ya`aqov (James) 1:5 | את Cepher

3. For “Muscle Repair” (Repentance and Restoring Your Walk)

  • If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Yochanon Ri’shon (1 John) 1:9 | את Cepher
  • Create in me a clean heart, O YAHUAH; and renew a right ruach within me. Tehilliym (Psalms) 51:10 | את Cepher

4. For Mental Health and Peace (Fighting Anxiety)

  • Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto YAHUAH. And the peace of YAHUAH, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Mashiach Yahusha. Philippiym (Philippians) 4:6-7 | את Cepher
  • For Elohiym has not given us the ruach of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Timotheus Sheniy (2 Timothy) 1:7 | את Cepher

5. For Endurance (When the Race Feels Too Long)

  • Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Yahusha the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of Elohiym. Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:1-2 | את Cepher
  • And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Galatiym (Galatians) 6:9-10 | את Cepher
How to use:
  • Daily Dose: Read a verse day along with your daily devotions. Don’t just read it—meditate on it (chew on it, swallow it, digest it and let it become part of you) throughout the day.
  • The Workout: Find ways to apply the scriptures in your daily life (e.g., If you read about peace, remember it and choose to respond calmly to a stressful situation).
  • The Guardrail: Whenever you feel tempted to consume “junk food” (toxic media or people), replace it with a few moments to deep dive into one of these chapters.
