THE MOUTH: A Weapon for Life or a Tool for Destruction?

Do you know that your own mouth can condemn you? Your words are among your biggest and strongest weapons. Used wisely, they build; used carelessly, they set a path toward self-destruction.

Proverbs 18:20–21 (NKJV)  “A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

The works of Deception

Believers are protected by YAHUAH, and as we see in the story of Job, the enemy cannot harm us without permission. To bypass this protection, the devil uses deception. He tricks us into bringing judgment upon ourselves.

In the Garden of Eden, the enemy didn’t force the fruit into Eve’s mouth. He used lies to convince her to choose disobedience. Today, he uses the same tactic. He is the “serpent of old” who deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9).

The Modern “Entertainment” Trap

One of the enemy’s most effective tools today is media; music, Hollywood, and even children’s animations. Under the guise of “just entertainment,” we are often lured into speaking things that YAHUAH hates.

Think about the songs you listen to. Do they promote the works of the flesh?

• Adultery and fornication
• Idolatry or sorcery
• Outbursts of wrath and selfish ambitions (Galatians 5:19–21)

When you sing along to blasphemy or use “filthy language” (Colossians 3:8), you are speaking the very things YAHUAH told you to put off.

The Heart-Mouth Connection

Many claim, “YAHUAH knows my heart.” While true, the Bible explains that the mouth is simply the overflow of what is already inside.

Matthew 12:34–35 (NKJV)  “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.”

If your mouth is spewing profanity, gossip, or malice, it is a direct reflection of the state of your heart. Matthew 15:11 reminds us: “Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

Taming the Unruly Fire

The Apostle James compares the tongue to a small rudder that steers a massive ship or a tiny spark that sets a whole forest on fire (James 3:3–6). It is a world of iniquity that can defile the entire body.

1. The “Slip of the Tongue” Myth

Claiming a “slip of the tongue” is a weak excuse for a lack of self-control. The Bible instructs us to be slow to speak.

• Psalm 39:1: “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle.”
• Proverbs 17:28: Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps his lips shut.
• Ecclesiastes 5:6 Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands?

2. Taking YAHUAH’s Name in Vain

Exodus 20:7 is clear: YAHUAH will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Respect the name of YHWH; do not use it aimlessly. Do not reduce his name to nothing by ignoring its importance. This is why we started this brand, to acknowledge HIS name and exalt HIM

3. Cussing and Profanity

Is it okay for Christians to use “cuss words”? Absolutely not.

Ephesians 4:29 commands: “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification.” If your mouth is perverse, it grieves the Holy Spirit.

4. Oaths and Promises

Do not make promises you cannot keep, and do not swear by Heaven or Earth. Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’ (Matthew 5:33–37). Anything more comes from the evil one.

5. Sarcasm and “Coarse Jesting”

Modern culture finds humor in the pain of others or in vulgar jokes. But Ephesians 5:4 warns against “coarse jesting,” which is not fitting for a believer. Mocking others or making light of sin (like adultery/cheating or fornication) is not “just a joke” it is wickedness.

Can We “Command” YAHUAH?

There is a dangerous trend among certain believers. They try to proclaim things into existence by “fire and force.”  We must remember that YAHUAH is not a genie. Yes, we can ask of things such as blessings and provision. What we absolutely cannot do is force our own will or desires over what YAH wants for us. Our desire must be to move in righteous and not in the carelessness of the world.

We do not command the Most High; we submit to Him. Even Yahusha, in His agony, prayed, “Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). We should ask with humility, knowing that YAHUAH hears us when we ask according to His will (1 John 5:14).

In Conclusion

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit. If you have been guilty of using your mouth to deceive, curse, or impose your will on YAHUAH, now is the time to repent.

Imagine standing before YAHUAH after a life of “religious” activity, only to hear: “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23).

Take action today:

1. Repent: Ask for forgiveness for every idle and profane word.
2. Guard: Pray like the David: “Set a guard, O YAHUAH, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3).
3. Study: Fill your heart with the Word so that what overflows from your heart is love, grace, truth and righteouness.

Get right with YAHUAH while there is still time.
